Roger Shackleforth is a man desperately in love with Leila, a woman who loves only herself and the idea of others loving her. Shackleforth will do anything to have Leila fall in love with him. Shackleforth comes upon a stranger who hands him a business card with the name A. Daemon listed on the front. Shackleforth decides to visit A. Daemon where he is sold a love potion for $1. Shackleforth provides this potion to Leila and she falls madly in love with him. In the beginning, it is wonderful. It is everything that Shackleforth had dreamed of, but then, like most things, it becomes overwhelming and stifling for him. He pays another visit to A. Daemon for a reverse potion which costs him $1,000. Shackleforth goes home with the intention to give Leila this potion to fall out of love him, but as he is ready to hand her a drink with the potion, Leila breaks that news that she is pregnant. In complete shock, Shackleforth drops the class with the potion and resigns to the fact that he will be with Leila forever.
The lesson in this week’s Twilight Zone episode is short and sweet, be careful what you wish for because you might just get it and it may not be what you need. Often we look at the things we do not have and wish they were ours; cars, jobs, houses, money, love, children, etc. We want what we don’t have because we think that by having them our lives will be fuller, richer, and have more meaning. What we don’t realize, is that when we allow desire to fuel our decisions, we will never be satisfied. Once you have what you once desired, you will desire something else and the cycle will continue. Fulfillment and contentment comes from within. Having a life that has meaning is what brings happiness, fulfillment, contentment, and joy. What makes a life have meaning is living for something that is larger than yourself. Living for something larger means living for something outside yourself, helping others, being of service, sharing your gift with the world, and seeing yourself as a part of the collective human experience.
What is it that you have wished for? Did it bring you the happiness you thought it would once you had it? If not, why not? What can you do to give your life meaning? How can you stop living from a place of desire and begin living in a place where you create the meaning in your life so that you look within and not outside. The sooner you realize you are enough, the happier and more content you will be.
