Construction of Your Mission Statement

How is your mission statement coming along? Are you stuck? Do you not know where to begin? Do you see the importance of a mission statement? Let me help you with your journey.

I know you may be thinking, I don’t have time for a mission statement. I don’t need a mission statement. Why is a mission statement important?A mission statement is important and necessary because it holds you accountable. It keeps you in line with your goals, when giving up may be easier. It gives you a road map to follow when sometimes the path is not clear. A mission statement is announcing to the world and more importantly you, who you are in the world and how you plan on leaving your mark. How you are going to participate everyday in life working towards your legacy. What is your legacy? Your legacy is how others will remember you. It is how the world will know that you existed and you were accounted for. We all have a purpose in this world and believe me no one is going to tell you what your purpose is, that is for you to find out. That is for you to claim.

Something we don’t do enough of is reflect. We are always so busy with work, the gym, homework, kids, family, obligations, etc. that we forget that we only get to do this once. Don’t get lost in your daily chores as a way of not spending needed time on reflecting on and understanding the most important person in your life, YOU.

Now lets get back to that mission statement. How do you start in writing one.

Here is how you get started:

Step one – Understand how you see the world. Before you can define your role within your world, you have to understand how you see the world. Do you see life happening to you and your reaction to it. Or do you see a world in which you create what happens to you. Are you an active participant or a mere observer? Are you the type of person who likes to take risks or are you happy in being comfortable?

Step two – Are you happy with the way you see the world? If not, CHANGE IT! No one has the power to change anything about you but you. If you don’t like what you see, change it. If you don’t like the way you think, change it. If you don’t like the way you feel, change it. Only you know the real you, the world only sees what you are willing to share, whether it be the real you or not.

Step three – Now that your have decided how you see the world and whether you need to change the way in which you see it, now comes the fun but hard part, how are you going to be accounted for? How are you going to leave your mark, your legacy? What parts of you are you going to show the world? The real you or the you that you hide behind? In order to determine what you are going to show the world, you need to know what is your value? What is your art work. I love art so I love this idea that your value is your art, and you as the artist can create whatever you want, whatever your vision is, whatever your minds eye wants to share. You have to be prepared that there are going to be people out there who are not going to appreciate your value, your art, but that is ok. For every person that doesn’t value or appreciate your art work, there is some right behind them that will. You have to know that you only need to matter to those that matter to you. So my question is to you, what does your art work look like?

Step four – Putting it all together. Make a statement that declares your role and how you are going to fulfill that role. Use present action words like I am. Don’t use future or past tense. Future tense means at some point you will become. Become who you are now, don’t wait. Past tense means you’ve done it and that it is not who you are now. Live in the now. Who you are today will determine who you are tomorrow.

I think the reason most people don’t have a mission statement is because declaring a mission statement involves two things that people don’t necessarily like; being vulnerable and sharing that vulnerability with others. Being vulnerable is hard, at times it brings great pain, but it also brings great rewards. By acknowledging who you are and how you want to make the world know that you are here, you are sharing the deepest parts of yourself. A first it is hard to be so vulnerable but with time, it becomes so freeing, you forget about the fear and only look for the reward.

So to recap, discover how you see the world, do you like how you see the world, change anything you don’t like, determine what your value or art work is that you are going to present to the world and then present it. Get to know yourself, learn to love yourself and then make the rest of the world know and love you.
