A Passage for Trumpet

enough21

Joey Crown, a lonely, broke, and down on his luck trumpet player who never lived up to his potential due to alcohol abuse. Crown tries to get some work at a former club but no one is willing to give him a second chance. With nowhere else to turn, Crown sells his only possession, his trumpet, at a local pawn shop. After using the money to drown his sorrows and woes in alcohol, Crown, looking to end his life, steps in front of a speeding truck. When he comes too, no one can see him except for a man named Gabe (short for Gabriel), also a trumpet player. Gabe explains to Crown that his is in limbo but he has the opportunity to go back to the land of the living but will be given the same life he currently has. Crown decides he wants to live. Upon waking in the street, the truck driver pushes money into his hand and drives off. Crown buys his trumpet back and returns to his apartment’s roof top to play. Upon playing his trumpet, Nan, a new tenant in Crown’s apartment building, approaches Crown. They hit if off and Crown offers to show her around town.

The closing remarks by Rod Sterling in this episode says it all “Joey Crown, who makes music, and who discovered something about life; that it can be rich and rewarding and full of beauty, just like the music he played, if a person would only pause to look and to listen. Joey Crown, who got his clue in the Twilight Zone. “

There are two ways to look at life; life is either happening to you or you are creating your life. How do you choose to look at life? That’s right, I said how do you “choose” to look at life. You are the only one who can choose the lens you use to look at life. With that choice, you have the power to change how you see the world around you. Will you see the world as a sad, ugly, and dark place that makes life difficult and hard. Or will you see life as beautiful, filled with hope, love, and magic? Life is hard, there is no rule book, and we only get to go through it once, how will you make your time count? How will you make your time matter? How will you make your time have meaning? We have to do the best with what we are given and create what we weren’t.

Viktor Frankl stated “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms - to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” We all have something to learn not only from Joey Crown but also Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust Survivor, it is up to us to choose how we view the life we were given. People will try to bring you down, life will wear you out, stress will be overwhelming at times, but you still have a choice. Choose a view that is filled with hope, love, optimism, and gratitude. Life is hard, but when you stop to see the beauty, the struggle we face becomes worth it.
